Storytelling By: Madeline Siano Mrs. Roberts IB Art 2, Period 5

Candidate Statement Before IB art, I had little experience with artistic exploration past 8 th grade level assignments. Developing a theme was my first and largest obstacle I had to face. I overcame this obstacle through research and reflection. I decided upon a theme that not only interested me but is relevant to my other classes. In my body of work I make an effort to illustrate one’s meanings, methods, and approaches to storytelling through. The second obstacle I faced was finding a medium which enabled me to surpass my usual mediocrity and fully develop and utilize my artistic ability. I began my efforts through trial and error, practice, and repetition. Before this exploration I was wary of paints. Although my first attempts were not the greatest, I have now overcome my fear of painting and it has become one of my strengths. My favorite mediums are pencil and oil paint; pencil because of its precision and oil paint because of its ability to blend easily, overlap layers, create texture, and the slow drying paint allows me to revisit my work whenever desired. For each of my pieces I come up with a topic that branches off from the central theme of storytelling. I then come up with a concept sketch that incorporates not only the theme but expands to cover subjects from different cultures, aesthetic techniques, and literary features that ties the piece together. Some aesthetic influences on my work include surreal artists Sandy Skoglund and Gabriel Bá. Their depiction of a reality which borders the lines of a fantastical world and underlying dark tones in their work connects with my work. Madeline Siano – 0518-267
