ADJECTIVES AND ADVERBS WE ARE NOT TWINS!!!

A WORD YOU NEED TO KNOW! MODIFY - TO ADD TO OR CHANGE

ADJECTIVES Adjectives modify and describe nouns !!! Dog Thought Phone Papers Stare Lovely Cell Creepy These Fluffy

ADJECTIVES ANSWER THE QUESTIONS: WHAT KIND WHICH HOW MANY?

PREDICATE ADJECTIVES What is a predicate? Raise your hand and describe it in your own words?

The predicate is the part of a sentence (or clause) which tells us what the subject does or is. To put it another way, the predicate is everything that is not the subject. http://www.grammar-monster.com/glossary/predicate.htm

PREDICATE ADJECTIVES Adjectives that are separate form the words they modify/describe by linking verbs. These adjectives are called predicate adjectives because they appear in the predicate of a sentence! The day was___________________________. The assignment seemed_______________________. She is _________________________. The wind feels______________________.

THINK BACK!!!! We learned types of pronouns, and we drew icons to represent each one. Guess which pronoun this icon represents! And why are we suddenly talking about Possessive Pronouns? (How are they different than Absolute Possessive Pronouns?) Possessive Pronouns are ADJECTIVES!!!!

ADJECTIVES ARE SOMETIMES POSSESSIVE PRONOUNS! THEY DESCRIBE WHO THE NOUN BELONGS TO. For Example: Did you answer his questions correctly? Its sails are tattered. Her brother was also her best friend. Please give my congratulations to your graduate! The dog buried its bone in our front garden.

SO IF ADJECTIVES DESCRIBE NOUNS, THEN ADVERBS DO NOT!!!! Rather, Adverbs modify/describe verbs, adjectives or other adverbs. Example of Adv. Describing a verb: We did our chores quickly. He jumped high. Examples of Adv. Describing an adjective: The sky was fairly clear. The dog was really fluffy. Examples of Adv. Describing another adverb: Joe talked rather quietly. He jumped really high.

ADVERBS ANSWER THE QUESTIONS: HOW WHERE WHEN WHY TO WHAT EXTENT?

WATCH YOUR LANGUAGE!!! 1.A French chef in New York chisels ice sculptures. 2.The old house quickly lost its shingles when the cold wind began to blow. 3.The dog buried its bone deeply in our front garden. 4.Please give my sincere apologies to your aunt. 5.This older cabins are cold and dirty. 6.The lifeguard swam extremely fast. 7.We did our chores more quickly today. 8.The boy is rather talented; he’ll go far if he works hard.
