2 Is, by itself, a verb meaning “to thank” It is also a surname There are an estimated 2 million people with this name Most live in southern China It is a pictophonetic character: Its radical, 言 (yán) means word Shè, 射, gives a hint at its pronunciation It is most commonly repeated as 谢谢 …xièxie When it is xièxie, it means thank you The second xie is neutral tone To be more polite and exuberant, one can say 谢谢, 谢谢 (repeating the common expression)

Have you eaten? 下雨了。 Xià yŭ le. It’s raining now.
