2  President Lyndon B. Johnson  Country was still in shock over the assassination of Kennedy.  Won election over Sen. Barry Goldwater.  Most caring president towards African Americans and fought for their rights.  Wanted to take poverty out of America completely. electricscotland.com

3  Reform of New Deal.  It was President Johnsons idea for a society without poverty and discrimination.  Wanted to give all Americans equal rights to education and job opportunities.  “War on Poverty”  Child Health Improvement and Protection Act, and Medicaid Act were passed as part of the Great Society. bentley.umich.edu

4  Johnson wanted to move Kennedys initiatives, including the civil rights act, through congress.  Launched war on poverty through economic opportunity act.  The great society was based off of several different civil rights acts.  Including, volunteers in service to America act, Project Head Start, higher education act, social security programs fair housing act, and more. obit-mag.com

5  The Great Society was made to show that the government could win the war on poverty.  “The Other America” by Michael Harrington.  Johnson stated that if the Great Society was going to work, than every person would have to do their part. obit-mag.com

6  1928 – 1989 in St. Louis.  Wrote the book “The Other America”.  Blamed the American society for the creation of poverty.  Stated that American poverty had not been solved, it just became invisible. filmakers.com

7  1965 Congress passed the Higher Education Act.  Gave out loans and scholarships to students who couldn’t afford tuition on their own.  Programs were passed to pay for text books and other school needs for kids that couldn’t pay for them.  Educational Opportunity Act & Educational Opportunity Act. brockport.edu

8  Johnson’s idea of the Great Society program was said to be based on the New Deal program.  It was very successful. It provided relief for the unemployed. Also more successful for creating legislative programs.  However not everything was done to make it more successful because of the Vietnam war.  The civil rights acts of 1964 – 1965 were landmarks in his career as the president. democraticunderground.com
