What is in Tobacco? Tobacco contains – Nicotine (causes addiction) – Tar Tobacco smoke contains – Carbon monoxide – Nitrogen oxide

How is Tobacco Used/Abused? Used in- – Smoking Cigarettes Cigars Pipes ❖ Can also be chewed or sniffed ❖ Abused when people smoke so much that they get addicted due to the nicotine.

Legal Consequences If under 18 & caught, it can lead to- – Fines – Educational classes – Community service

Effects of Tobacco Nicotine, the main chemical produced by exploiting tobacco, is a stimulant Nicotine acts on the brain by stimulating different receptors including Dopamine, the “feel good” brain chemical Also stimulates the Adrena Medulla, creating adrenaline Makes people feel alert

Administering Tobacco The FDA has only recently began regulating tobacco (2009) Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act It is illegal to advertise tobacco products on television Surgeon General’s warning found on every pack of cigarettes in the U.S.

How Tobacco is Grown/Manufactured 1.The tobacco plant is harvested. 2.Then it’s dried and broken up into pieces by a machine. 3.Then artificial flavoring and chemicals are added before the tobacco is turned into products such as cigarettes, cigars, or snuff.

Statistics Continued 1.Worldwide, approximately 10 million cigarettes are purchased a minute, 15 billion are sold each day, and upwards of 5 trillion are produced and used on an annual basis. 2.There is enough nicotine in four or five cigarettes to kill an average adult if ingested whole. 3.Ambergris, otherwise known as whale vomit is one of the hundreds of possible additives used in manufactured cigarettes. 4.Radioactive lead and polonium are both present in low levels in cigarette smoke. 5.Secondhand smoke contains more than 70 cancer-causing chemical compounds. 6.Kids are still picking up smoking at the alarming rate of 3,000 a day in the U.S., and 80,000 to 100,000 a day worldwide. 7.Worldwide, one in five teens age 13 to 15 smoke cigarettes. 8.Approximately one quarter of the youth alive in the Western Pacific Region (East Asia and the Pacific) will die today from tobacco use. 9.Tobacco use is expected to claim one billion lives this century unless serious anti- smoking efforts are made on a global level. http://quitsmoking.about.com/od/tobaccostat istics/a/tobaccofacts.htm
