Benefits of Health Eating Healthy eating reduces risk of heart disease, cancer, stroke, and diabetes (several leading causes of death) Proper nutrition promotes optimal growth and development

Consequences of a Poor Diet A poor diet can lead to energy imbalance A poor diet can increase the risk for lung, esophageal, stomach, colorectal, and prostate cancers. Drinking sugar-sweetened beverages can result in weight gain, overweight, and obesity. Eating fast food one or more times a week increases risk for weight gain, overweight and obesity.

Long Term Consequences of Physical Inactivity Physical inactivity and poor diet lead to becoming overweight/obese Increases risk for diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and asthma Increases risk of dying prematurely or from heart disease

Health Effects of Obesity Childhood and adolescent obesity has tripled in past 30 years 18% of adolescents ages 12-19 are obese Overweight and obesity are the result of caloric imbalance

Long-term Health Effects of Obesity Adolescents that are obese are more likely to be obese as adults At risk for heart disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, several types of cancer, and osteoarthritis Increased risk for many types of cancers: cancer of the breast, colon, endometrium, esophagus, kidney, pancreas, gall bladder, thyroid, ovary, cervix, and prostate

Diet and Academic Performance Eating a healthy breakfast is associated with improved cognitive function (especially memory), reduced absenteeism, and improved mood

Food Groups The five food groups are: vegetables, fruits, grains, dairy, and protein foods Eating the right amounts from each food group will provide you with a healthy, balanced diet

Water What does water do in my body? Keeps body temperature normal Lubricates/cushions joints Protects spinal cord and other sensitive tissues Helps body get rid of waste

Dietary Fat 20% - 35% of total calories should come from fat Polyunsaturated and monounsaturated are the more healthy fats

Carbohydrates Your body uses carbohydrates (carbs) to make glucose which is the fuel that gives you energy and helps keep everything going. You can find carbs in the following: fruits, vegetables, breads, cereals, other grains, milk, and milk products Healthier foods higher in carbohydrates include ones that provide dietary fiber and whole grains as well as those without added sugars.

Protein Proteins are part of every cell, tissue, and organ in our bodies Protein is found in the following foods: meats, poultry, fish, legumes, tofu, eggs, nuts, seeds, milk, grains 10% - 35% of your daily calories should come from protein

How much physical activity do I need? 2.5 hours of moderate intensity aerobic exercise and muscle strengthening activities on 2 or more days a week

Vitamins and Minerals Vitamins are organic substances (made by plants or animals), minerals are inorganic elements that come from the earth; soil and water and are absorbed by plants Vitamins and minerals, have a unique role to play in maintaining your health

Facts about Physical Activity Less than half (48%) of all adults meet the physical activity guidelines Less than 3 in 10 high school students gets 60 minutes of physical activity a day Physical activity improves health and helps people live longer and reduce risk of heart disease

Obesity Facts More than ⅓ of US adults (35.7%) are obese Obesity-related conditions include heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and certain types of cancer In 2008, medical costs associated with obesity were estimated at $147 billion
