Media: the material an artist uses to create a piece of artwork. Graphite: drawing medium, usually in a pencil Tempera paint: an opaque water based paint Acrylic: paint that has a polymer (plastic) base

Observational Drawing Gesture drawings are fast, rather “messy” drawings, without detail, that show the “movement”, basic shape, size and proportion of the subject being drawn. Contour drawings are slow, continuous line drawings that seem to “touch the edges of the subject. “Blind” contour drawings are also slow, continuous line drawings that are done without looking at the drawing at all, but only at the subject. Value is how dark or light something is. In a drawing, adding value can create the appearance of depth.

Clay terms: Clay building techniques : Pinch- using fingers to push or pinch clay into a form Coil- a hand rolled, round, thin piece of clay Slab- a piece of clay pressed flat by hand or with a roller Score- to scratch into a clay surface for attaching two clay pieces Parts of a clay container: Foot- bottom of a clay piece holding up the body Rim- the opening of a container Body- the part of a container that holds contents

Collage terms: Mixed media- multiple materials used in a single piece of artwork Collage- French term meaning “to glue” Layering paper, transparent images, paint, pastel and marker are just a few of the materials that can be used in a collage.

Color Mixing Hue = Color Intensity: how bright or dull a color is. (Intensity of a color can be adjusted using compliments or opposites) Value: how light or dark a color is. (A shade is a color mixed with black. A tint is a color mixed with white.)

Primary Colors: all colors can be mixed from these three colors (they cannot be made from other colors): Red Yellow Blue Secondary Colors: made by mixing 2 primaries together Green (yellow and blue) Orange (yellow and red) Violet (red and blue) Tertiary Colors: made by mixing a primary and a secondary that are next to each other on the color wheel. Yellow-green Blue-green Blue-violet Red-violet Red-orange Yellow-orange

Color Schemes Analogous or harmonious colors: colors that are next to each other on the color wheel (think warm and cool). Complementary colors: colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel. Neutrals are made from mixing complementary colors together. Monochrome color schemes are made up of one color with only tints and shades of that same color.
