CRT/N INITIATIVES IN PROMOTING CLEAN COOKSTOVES IN NEPAL Presentation by: Shovana Maharjan Program Officer, Centre for Rural Technology, Nepal (CRT/N)

OUTLINE Introduction of CRT/N CRT/N and clean cookstove Stoves developed/ promoted by CRT/N Rocket stoves in Nepal Types of Rocket stove Project area Efficiency(Lab and field) Issues on rocket stove Technical issue Social issues Ongoing R&D in rocket stove

Introduction of CRT/N Established above 2 decades ago To develop, promote and disseminate environmentally sound rural/appropriate technologies To strengthen capability of rural communities in creating better opportunities through mobilization of local resources to improve livelihoods Disseminated more than 262,000 ICS to remote households in Nepal with over a million beneficiaries

Working Areas of CRT/N Biomass-based Programme Household/ Institutional Improved Cooking Stoves (ICS/IICS), rocket stove Bio-briquette/Charcoal Hydro-based Programme Improved Water Mill (IWM), electrification Hydraulic Ram Pump Solar-based Programme Solar cookers Solar dryers Technological Innovation Livelihood enhancement Gender Mainstreaming and Social Inclusion Climate Change Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and Verified Emission Reduction (VER) projects Adaptation Projects Livelihood Enhancement Networking

CRT/N’s Involvement in Development and Promotion of Clean Cookstoves Key implementer of Biomass Energy Support Program (BESP) during first phase from 2000 to 2005 then continued as implementing partner till 2013 – CRT/N promoted 208,906+ ICS out of 637,000 + of BESP Initiated first CDM project on ICS in Nepal from 2010 – 14,807 ICS promoted A number of projects supported by various support organizations – about 20,851 ICS promoted A total of 266,596 ICS promoted by CRT/N by December, 2013

Social assistances of ICS Health improvement through improvement of indoor air quality Income generation opportunities for those involved in stove promotion Institutional capacity building of partner organizations in managing renewable energy solutions Gender mainstreaming and social inclusion

Rocket Stoves in Nepal AEPC model (19%) CRT/N (RS 1.1): 23.4% Life Rocket Stove (35.2%) Government Model NGO Private Sector

Types of Rocket stove RS 1.1: 23.4%RS 3.1: 30.1% TPHR stove with Chimney (30%) Fuel chamber: 2 mm mild steel pipe of 10 cm diameter and 19 cm length Combustion chamber: 2 mm mild steel pipe of 10 cm diameter and 30 cm height Grate: fixed Fuel chamber: 1 cm thick, 19cm long and 10 cm diameter, ceramic pipe Combustion chamber: 1 cm thick, 30 cm high and 10 cm diameter ceramic pipe Grate: fixed Fuel chamber: 5.5 mm thick, 19cm long and 10 cm diameter, metallic pipe Combustion chamber: 5.5 mm thick, 30 cm high and 10 cm diameter metallic pipe Grate: fixed

Project area ICF :SNV supported Hariyo Ban: USAID supported R&D for household and institutional: SNV/IUCN supported

Field Testing Graph showing comparison between average efficiency during high power test for different kinds of rocket stoves USAID supported project “Piloting of Rocket Stoves for Reducing Emissions and Conserving Forests”

Issues on rocket stove Technical issue Breakage of ceramic/ metal Social issues : User’s behavior of using large amount of wood Small fire gate Pot rest depending upon the shape of pot/ variety of food Large firewood size Affordability Too Tall
