Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning This certificate: Prepares students for work and TAFE training Classes at school 3 days a week, Wednesday at TAFE and Friday at work Learning is hands on and related to life and work

It is possible to achieve Intermediate VCAL at Yr 11 and Senior at Yr 12 VCAL students must do a VET study- which usually involves them going to TAFE each Wednesday. This is an integral part of the certificate as it provides industry specific skills important for vocational and employability outcomes. It is possible to transfer from VCAL to VCE and from VCE to VCAL at the semester breaks and carry credits with you.

Examples: Building Hospitality Sport & Rec Plumbing Com Services Electrotech’y Music Automotive Hair & Beauty Retail Electives: The Beat Healthy Me My Melbourne Jeff’s Shed ICT (compulsory extra PD unit for Yr 11 students) Electives: Ag & Horticulture Business Management Health & Human Development Physical Education Visual Communication & Design

My Melbourne Students negotiate community projects with their teacher- SynFM, Fernhill Hostel, Sacred Heart Mission, Woodworking, Coaching. Healthy Me Students learn the essentials about hygiene, menu planning, nutrition, economical meals. They cook every week and enjoy eating the scrumptious food they prepare. Personal Development Electives You are required to select one unit of PD each semester

Jeff’s Shed Students design and build projects negotiated with their teacher- wood, metal, auto, engineering and plumbing. The Beat Students learn technical and practical aspects of music production and performance including sound and light, event management, cd/dvd production, instrumental instruction. The unit is interactive and teaches students a variety of skills including team work and problem solving. Pete’s ICT Compulsory additional PD units for all Yr 11 students (Intermediate). Students learn essentials such as web development, Internet search engines, software applications, graphics, and animation. The aim is to equip students with personal and workplace ICT skills to improve their employability. PD Electives cont.

VCE Units Available Visual Communication & Design Health & Human DevelopmentBusiness Management A range of tasks including 2d & 3d illustration, tattoo design, advertising & event posters, logo design, house design, stencils and public mural art. Students work in a range of methods including drawing, digital design, spray painting. A range of health issues relating to youth- physical, social and mental health.Students examine health and individual development of Australian children from conception to adolescence, including factors which have an impact on development (drugs, genetics, body weight). The unit is very practical, with students participating in classes at a local gym regularly to improve their own health. Small Business Management focuses on the general business environment with particular interest in small business management- planning, financing, managing and evaluating. Students operate a school-based short-term business.

VCE Units Available Physical EducationAg & Horticulture Physical Education aims to introduce students to basic concepts of physical activity in contributing to the heath of individuals in the wider community. The science of movement is explored to improve performance. Students have the opportunity to work on their own fitness and the program’s practical component is negotiated with the students. Students are introduced to the general principles of growing plants. Students investigate, manage and operate an enterprise involving vegetable production.
