Design for Downstream

Small changes taken Use of colours for fast visual update status Red = connected – can be issued to fabrication Green = partly connected – cannot be issued Grey = modelled but awaiting external information / calcs

Small changes taken Design and drawing for efficient manufacture Align as many holes in web and flange = can be drilled at same time Use the same hole size = less tool changing Few seconds saved over thousands of holes is a big benefit 

Small changes taken

Small Changes we’d like to see At a steel users level we see where we are and where we are going Models – Drawings – Machines (CNC, Robots) But ….we will still need drawings With Execution Classes we need far better drawings right now

Small changes we’d like to see Neutral Data -.rvt to.ifc Accurate Timely Relevant Up to date Ability to be kept up to date BIM Execution Plans that reflect the reality of supply chain

Small Changes we’d like to see Type Steel & Cladding Package Technical % Sub Package Total Development Cost% Development Cost Renewable Energy Plant 6,400,000 163,0002.5% 150,000,0000.11% TypeSteelTechnical % Sub Package Total Development Cost% Development Cost Beam Column London 1,380,000 47,0003.4% 33,120,0000.14% Beam Column London 1,420,000 58,4004.1% 17,000,0000.34% Average 1,400,000 52,7003.8% 25,060,0000.21%

Small Changes we’d like to see TypeSteelTechnical % Sub Package Total Development Cost% Development Cost Shed 1 850,000 42,0004.9% 8,500,0000.49% Shed 2 1,550,000 106,0006.8% 15,500,0000.68% Shed 3 2,000,000 66,0003.3% 20,000,0000.33% Shed 4 2,350,000 62,0002.6% 23,500,0000.26% Average 1,687,500 71,3334.2% 16,875,0000.42%

Small Changes we’d like to see Assumptions –Take a contract with the highest percentage of technical costs @ 0.42% –Use cost of money @ 5% –No monthly interim payments - £71k “up front” –Relate this to the contract program

Small changes we’d like to see

Small Changes we’d like to see £71,000 outlay 27 weeks ahead of normal at 5% costs £1,843 4 crews @ £10,000 / crew / week cost £40,000 per week Site costs for just steel £8,000 / day Finance costs £14 / day Can we save more than £14 / day by utilising BIM during the capital expenditure phase more effectively? Small beer = potentially a big benefit? Feel that current focus is too much on “Op Ex BIM” and we’re in danger of not realising the “Cap Ex BIM” benefit

Summary Series of building blocks Gradual integration and converging technologies Overtime this has reaped big benefits Digital era is here – what we draw is real These small changes have had big benefits

Thank You
