The Caretaker By Harold Pinter
2
Harold Pinter’s use of Dreams in the production, The Caretaker.
Harold Pinter uses lots of themes in his production, some he may not of even realised they were there. Throughout the play there is a strong theme of dreams, Aston wants to build a shed, Davies wants to get to Sidcup and Mick wants to clean the house up. All of these dreams don’t seem to be ambitious at all. This shows the characteristics of the people Pinter is trying to portrait, the lonely man.
3
Aston “ to build my shed.” “ I might build my shed outback.”
This shows that Aston feels that the shed belongs to him. It also shows how he cares for it as if It has a personality. “ I might build my shed outback.” This is Aston planning his dream, which is shown throughout the production. It shows that it is something he is serious about, yet he makes no action.
4
Davies “ if only I could get down to Sidcup.”
This is more like an excuse for Davies, to stop him having to move on. When Davies knows that he wont get down to Sidcup, where as Astons ‘dream’ of building his shed is more likely to happen. “ I don’t dream, I never dream.” This is abit of a contradiction really. Davies is trying to act like a hard man who has just what he wants, and has no need for dreams when in fact it is the total opposite.
5
Mick “I could really rely on a man like you to keep an eye on things.”
This shows that Mick lusts for the power to control people and to have them work for him. But the only man he can control is a tramp. “I’ve got my own business to build up, haven't I ?” This shows that Mick believes that he has a better place to be when in fact he has not.

Conclusion Each of the characters in the caretaker have dreams, Aston's is blatantly obvious, Davies pretends as if he has non, maybe he thinks it’s a sign of weakness, and Mick has bigger visions that both Davies and Aston, he has a practical reason for not pursuing his dream at that point whilst Aston and Davies have no other reason, they seem to be scared to fulfil their dreams, maybe they are worried that if they succeed their ambition, they shall have nothing else to claim from life.
