Mental Health Key features/description Mental health is defined as a state of wellbeing in which every individual: realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community

There are two categories of mental illness Psychotic Illnesses Schizophrenia ● Characterised by severe disturbances in thoughts, emotions and behaviour ● Can include hallucinations and delusional behaviour Bipolar ● Manic depressant ● Extreme mood changes from severe depression to extreme elation Non- Psychotic Illnesses Depression ● Mood disorder – intense and persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness and lack of interest and enjoyment in everyday activities Eating Disorders Anxiety ● Characterised by feelings of worry or nervousness when faced with threat, danger or a stressful situation

Reasons for MENTAL HEALTH as a NHPAs ●Mental illness is the most common non-fatal burden of disease in Australia. It contributes more YLDs to the total burden of disease ●The rates of reported cases of mental illness have increased in the Australian population in recent years ● Prevention and treatment strategies such as medication and therapy can be extremely effective in managing the condition

EG Beyondblue organisation ●Cost of a carer for someone who has a mental illness – transport, shopping, cleaning, washing, cooking ●Loss of income as a person cannot work because of a mental illness. ●The cost of social security payments through Centrelink for someone who cannot work because of a mental illness ●Loss of taxation revenue by the government because of person is unable to work and not pay taxes ●Loss of productivity by the person who cannot work ●Person may experience a range of emotions – sadness, anger, frustration, fear, despair. ●loss of confidence and independence Family and friends experience loss and sadness – experiencing the person with a mental illness

A health promotion program relevant to MENTAL HEALTH that has been introduced to reduce the burden of disease associated with MENTAL HEALTH NMen’s Shed O Victorian Men’s Shed Association F develop mentor programs for school aged children, assist refugees to integrate into their new community, and provide a place for participants to have a chat, learn new skills and give back to the community. put their skills to use for the benefit of their community, Becoming a member of a Men’s Shed gives a man that safe and busy environment where he can find many of these things in an atmosphere of old-fashioned mateship. It helps to develops good health - feeling good about yourself, being productive and valuable to your community, connecting to friends and maintaining an active body and an active mind. And, importantly, there is no pressure. Men can just come and have a yarn and a cuppa if that is all they’re looking for. O To reduce the rates of depression and other associated mental health issues
