2 What are Certificates of Origin (COs)? USCIB Trade Services

3 Certificates of Origin (COs)  International trade document  Confirms origin of goods being exported  Required third party verification of Origin: Geneva Convention 1923  Two types :  Non-Preferential: standard rules of origin and duty  Preferential: Free Trade Agreements USCIB Trade Services

4 Why are COs needed?  May be required by customs authority of the importing country:  Preferential duty rate  Standard import requirement for entry  May be required by a financial institution to comply with the terms of payment  Letter of Credit  Bank Payment Obligation USCIB Trade Services

5 Demystifying COs  COs DO NOT need to be notarized  NOR do they need a raised seal  May be issued for goods of non-U.S. origin  Multiple origin on one CO is acceptable  Paper forms are NO LONGER the only way to present a CO  Third party endorsement required  FTAs: NAFTA and KORUS USCIB Trade Services
