1 EUKARYOTES

2 EUKARYOTES ANTICIPATION GUIDE
(Choices for each question include protists, fungi,
plants, and animals.) 1. Do not contain cell walls and can move 2. Unicellular or multicellular organisms that live mostly in water 3. Heterotrophic organisms that act as decomposers 4. Multicellular, autotrophic organisms that have cell walls made of cellulose 5. Can cause diseases like Malaria and African Sleeping Sickness 6. Examples include mushrooms, molds, mildew, and yeasts. 7. Classified as invertebrates or vertebrates 8. Examples include algae, amoebas, diatoms. 9. Classified as vascular and non-vascular 10. Have cell walls made of chitin protists fungi plants plants fungi plants fungi animals animals animals protists protists

3 Eukaryote characteristics:
*A eukaryote is an organism whose cells have a true nucleus and membrane bound
organelles. *They are classified into 4 separate kingdoms. *Can be unicellular or multicellular *Contain autotrophs and heterotrophs Eukaryotic plant
  cell Eukaryotic animal cell

5 Kingdom Protista (Protists)
*Kingdom Protista is the kingdom from which the other eukaryotic
kingdoms are thought to have evolved. *They can be unicellular, multicellular, or colonial. *Reproduce sexually or asexually. *Examples include all types of algae, amoebas, paramecia, and
euglena. *Can be autotrophs or heterotrophs. *Some protists, like the euglena, can be both autotrophic and
heterotrophic!

6 Types of protists: 1) Animal-like protists- (protozoans) are grouped by movement. They use cilia,
pseudopods, or flagella. 2) Plant-like protists- mainly algae that go thorough photosynthesis. 3) Fungi-like protists- decomposers like slime molds and downy mildews.

9 Benefits of protists: *Major source of food in aquatic ecosystems! *Phytoplankton produce most of our oxygen! *Red algae is used in food! Harmful effects of protists: *Cause diseases like Malaria and African
Sleeping Sickness! *Algal blooms kill fish! *Dinoflagellates cause red tides that produce
toxins in shellfish!

11 Kingdom Fungi: *Mostly multicellular. *Have cell walls made of chitin. *All are heterotrophs and obtain nutrition
by feeding on dead or decaying matter. *Reproduce sexually or asexually. *Lack structures for independent movement. *Examples include yeasts, molds, smuts,
rusts, and mushrooms.

12 Benefits of fungi: *Decomposers! *Make up many types of food! *Important in medicine! (Penicillin) Harmful effects of fungi: *Cause disease (ringworm, athlete's foot, jock
itch, and nail, hair, & lung infections) *Spoil food.

13 Pictures of fungi:

14 Kingdom Plantae: *Multicellular autotrophs. *Have rigid cell walls made of cellulose. *Reproduce sexually or asexually. *Lack structures for independent movement. *Benefits of plants:  -Provide oxygen!  -Basis of food chain!  -Building supplies!  -Clothing!

15 Pictures of plants:

16 Kingdom Animalia: *Multicellular heterotrophs *Most reproduce sexually *Do not have cell walls *Move from place to place *Contains more species than any other
kingdom of eukaryotes.
