1 Kalpsar : A kayakalp project Biggest Tidal project in the world envisaged
S R Awasthi

2 Tidal power is dependent on the tides created by the moon’s gravitational pull on earth

3 Potential : Places with highest tidal range gulf of Kutch in India

4 Gujarat : Gulf of Khambhat

5 Gulf of Khambhat

6 Gulf of Khambhat

7 Why a kayakalp project ? fresh water reservoir = 2000 km2
12 rivers including Narmada, Mahi, Sabarmati, Dadhar Dam = km long and 35 m wide Tidal power plant = 5,880 MW by installing bulb turbines of 40 MW each. Highway multi-lane & a railway line across Gulf of Khambhat connecting Ghogha in Bhavnagar district in Saurashtra with Hansot in Bharuch District in South Gujarat, reducing distance by about 225 km. Reclamation of land = 4 Lac hectares of saline will be replaced by fresh water.

8 Modified plan A new location under investigation reduing dam length to 29 kms Estimation project cost reduction from Rs Cr to Rs Cr. Execution : start = 2012 completion = 2020

9 Types of Tidal Power Generation
Barrages Tidal Streams

10 Tidal Barrage Turbines Sluice gates Embankments

11 Bulb Turbine

12 Straflo or Rim Generator Turbine

13 Tubular Turbine

14 Tidal streams Instead of damming estuaries the tidal currents are harnessed using wind like turbines

15 Main methods of current generation
Marine current generator Stingray Tidal fence
