3 The view of the faculty mentor Challenges: staying current and competitive, doing interdisciplinary science, maintaining complex instrumentation, lack of continuity, daily interaction with non-peers, time. Rewards: infusion of new knowledge, moving into emerging areas, additional technical expertise, enhanced continuity, daily interaction with a peer, more time for research.

4 The view of the postdoctoral fellow Benefits: exposure to scholarly life at a PUI, teaching experience, interaction with undergraduates. Disadvantages: less vibrant research environment, fewer publications, impact on job placement.
