What does PPI, Equality and Human Rights expect from us? Citizens at the heart of policy and decision- making Relationship building – not one-off exercises Active involvement – not passive consultation or fait accompli Promotion of equality of opportunity in involvement Having a strategic plan of action

What does PPI, Equality and Human Rights expect from us? Managing public expectations Reflect the economic climate Use a range of evidence to develop learning in organisations Accessible engagement methods Building trust and confidence Openess and accountability

The importance of being trustworthy ‘Whether we’re selling a political message or a packet of cereal, everyone in the communications business is now faced with a fundamental decline in trust. … You can have all the facts and figures, all the supporting evidence, all the endorsement you want, but if you don’t command trust, you won’t get anywhere. ( Cont’d …)

The importance of being trustworthy And trust, of course is the one thing that can’t be built in a one-off spate of advertising. Trust is built over the long-term, on the basis not of communication but of action. And then again, trust, once established, can be lost in an instant – one ill-judged remark and it’s gone forever.’ Neil Fitzgerald, Chairman, Unilever, Address to the Advertising Association, 2001

It’s not just what you do it’s the way that you do it! Equality Impact Assessment 7 step engagement process Partnership working Pooling our expertise Pooling our resources Reducing the burden on people we depend on talking to us

Demonstrating the promotion of equality in involvement Equality Scheme Equality Data PPI

‘It is in the spirit of Andrew Jackson that I, from time to time, ask senior staff to have face-to-face meetings with those people representing organisations who have a difficult time getting our attention. I know the more jaded among you, see this as something rather beneath you. But I assure you that listening to the voices of passionate Americans is beneath no one, and surely not the peoples’ servants.’ Leo McGarry, Chief of Staff, West Wing, Series 1

And finally…. Consider: When was the last time you and/or your senior managers met with an individual or organisation that doesn’t normally get an audience with you?
