4
CRICOS No. 00213J a university for the world real R What do we mean by ‘Open’? Open access (OA) is making research results freely available to anyone with an internet connection –Peer reviewed articles –Data –Research outputs in the form of software –Scholarly monographs
5
CRICOS No. 00213J a university for the world real R How is open access provided? Author uploads a manuscript version to a repository Author publishes in an open access journal Gold OA Green OA For publications……
6
CRICOS No. 00213J a university for the world real R Gold Open Access Published version is open access Generally, published under CC Licence Generally, author retains copyright Sometimes author pays Sage Open http://sgo.sagepub.com/http://sgo.sagepub.com/ PLOS ONEPLOS ONE http://www.plosone.org/http://www.plosone.org/ http://www.biomedcentral.com /
7
CRICOS No. 00213J a university for the world real R Green Open Access Free for authors Allows academics more choice (where to publish) Provides tracking of downloads and citations Does not mean no peer review –Accepted Manuscript version includes changes made following peer review – but not the publisher ‘value-adds’

CRICOS No. 00213J a university for the world real R Other Shades of Open ‘ Degrees’ of open access : Free online access (no paywall barriers) Free online access plus some additional re-use rights Jorge Cham cc-by http://openeconomics.net/files/2013/02/openaccess.png

CRICOS No. 00213J a university for the world real R Other shades of open….. Green OA after an embargo period Almost OA - mediated by author (‘request copy’) Hybrid journals (subscription journals which offer a fee- based OA option) https://www.flickr.com/photos/karola/3623768629 https://www.flickr.com/photos/75898532@N00/4235249463 https://www.flickr.com/photos/ellenvdb/2447838925
10
CRICOS No. 00213J a university for the world real R Darker shades of open Predatory publishers Purport to be peer reviewed but are not Any article, no matter how flawed, is accepted if author willing to pay No editorial board No value-add services Not indexed by Scopus or Web of Science (or other reputable indexing service) Misleading information about location of company CC-BY-NC-ND https://www.flickr.com/photos/waltjabsco/8170173152

CRICOS No. 00213J a university for the world real R Disruptive dissemination of research outputs Figshare have partnered with F1000 to publish integrated research articles which include all the associated data files. One contains over 10GB of raw data files within the article. Data can be perused in the browser or downloaded. This is what science looks like today. It is not static images in a PDF. http://figshare.com/blog/Disruptive_dissemination_of_research_outputs/40#sthash.1EGYO7Gj.dp uf
