Aim: Express greetings and farewells and words of politeness in Spanish.

When greeting someone it is customary to shake hands. Many people also exchange a kiss on the cheek or a hug. The greeting changes with the time of the day.

Buenos días is used in the morning.

Buenas tardes is used in the afternoon and early evening.

Buenas noches is used at night.

Hasta mañana means “until tomorrow”

Hasta luego Means: “see you later”

If you want to find out someone’s name you can ask:

¿Cómo te llamas?

To answer that question you say: Me llamo _________ (My name is ______)

¿Cómo se llama? “What is his or her name?” ¿Cómo se llama Usted? What is your name? (formal- used for adults or when showing respect)

“Encantado” which is one way to say nice to meet you!

Boys: You have to use the form: Encantado

Girls: You say “Encantada”

You can also say “es un placer” which means “it’s a pleasure”

Or you can say also “Mucho gusto” which means “Nice to meet you”

You can respond to “Nice to meet you” also by saying: “El gusto es mío.” which means: The pleasure is all mine. Lastly, you could say “Igualmente” which means “likewise.”

Saying where people are from: Question: ¿De donde eres tú? Where are you from? Answer: Yo soy de___________ (place). I am from ____________ (place).
