3 doc.: IEEE 802.11-13/1183r0 Submission Background: PCP Selection in 11ad(1) In the PBSS, one STA assumes the role of the PCP. The PCP selection procedure is performed by the SME in the following cases(see 10.1.4.3.4): –At the reception of an MLME-SCAN.confirm primitive that was received in response to an MLME-SCAN.request primitive with the value of the ScanType parameter equal to ACTIVE and BSSType parameter equal to PERSONAL –As part of a PCP handover September 2013 Slide 3 Dejian Li, Hisilicon

4 doc.: IEEE 802.11-13/1183r0 Submission Background: PCP Selection in 11ad(2) PCP Factor –The decision whether the STA performs in the role of PCP is done by comparing the value of the STA’s PCP Factor (self_PCP_factor) and the PCP Factor of the peer STA (peer_PCP_factor) –The PCP Factor is constructed by concatenating the value of select fields present in the STA’s DMG Capabilities element. If the STA’s value of self_PCP_factor is greater than the value of peer_PCP_factor, the STA becomes a candidate PCP. September 2013 Slide 4 Dejian Li, Hisilicon

5 doc.: IEEE 802.11-13/1183r0 Submission PCP selection under multi-channel condition Multiple channel widths existed in 802.11aj lead to that STAs may have different channel support capabilities. –60GHz: 2.16GHz, 1.08GHz –45GHz: 1.08GHz, 540MHz In 11aj, one PCP/AP cluster may be formed on multiple channels, which requires consideration of supported channels capability when performing PCP selection. –For 802.11ad PCP selection,“Decentralized PCP/AP clustering”is a second most significant characteristic. To support the 11aj multi-channel PCP/AP clustering and to facilitate the 60GHz/45GHz band transition, a PCP with higher multi-channel operating capability is required. 6 doc.: IEEE 802.11-13/1183r0 Submission Obtain the Supported Channel Width Set “Supported Channel Width Set” is used to indicate the multi-channel support capability of a STA. –All the supported channel widths and frequency bands can be acquired via analyzing the peer STA’s Operating Class field based on its definition in Annex E. –The Operating Class field is included in Country element or Supported Operating Classes element. –The STA can acquire the Country IE or Supported Operating Classes IE at the time such as association. –The value of Supported Channel Width Set is obtained via encoding with the following step. 8 doc.: IEEE 802.11-13/1183r0 Submission The proposed PCP selection scheme Based on the value of Supported Channel Width Set and the DMG Capabilities IE, 11aj STA/PCP creates a new PCP Factor. –The new PCP Factor shall comprise Supported Channel Width Set and the construction method is given in the following figure As the same as 11ad, the STA with the maximum PCP Factor is selected as a candidate PCP. 9 doc.: IEEE 802.11-13/1183r0 Submission Keep Backward Compatibility with 11ad Keeping backward compatibility with 11ad require adjacent 11aj and 11ad STAs use identical PCP Factor format, –If at least one 802.11ad STA is detected in the peer STAs, the PCP Factor is constructed according to the approach given in 11ad. –If all peer STAs are 802.11aj STAs, the PCP Factor is constructed according to the Figure in last slide. September 2013 Slide 9 Dejian Li, Hisilicon

10 doc.: IEEE 802.11-13/1183r0 Submission Summary The PCP selection shall consider the supported channel widths of STAs, since 11aj has multiple channel widths in both 60GHz and 45GHz. PCP Factor construction is improved to select the STA with higher channel support capability as PCP, which makes sure that the selected PCP can implement the multi-channel decentralized clustering, 60GHz/45GHz transition or other PBSS managements.
