Muscular System Explain the primary functions of the muscular system and the major organs within the muscular system.

How many muscles do I have? I have about 650 muscles in my body. I have about 650 muscles in my body. My muscles make up half of my body weight. My muscles make up half of my body weight.

Functions of the muscular system 1. Movement – without muscles you would not be able to move! 2. Pump my blood 3. Hold my organs in place

Parts of the muscular system 1. Muscles - organs that contracts and gets shorter- this provides the force to move your body parts. 2. Tendons – attach muscles to bones

Why do I need tendons? Tendons attach my muscles to my bone helping my body move. Feel your tendon right above your heel in the back of your leg. This is the thickest tendon in your body.

Muscles and Tendons

Muscles and bones work together for movement

Frontalis Deltoid Pectoralis major Abdominals Biceps brachii Quadriceps femoris Tibialis anterior Sartorius

Trapezius Deltoid Triceps brachii Gluteus maximus Biceps femoris (hamstrings) Gastrocnemius Achilles tendon

Muscle Movement 1. Involuntary- Automatically move without you knowing. 2. Voluntary- Brain sends message to muscle. You control the movements.

3 types of muscles 1. Smooth Muscles 2. Cardiac Muscle 3. Skeletal Muscles- Are voluntary and help you move.

Skeletal muscle 1. Skeletal Muscles- muscles that move bones (skeletal = bones) 2. Voluntary muscles 3. Look striped or striated 4. Example – biceps, hamstrings

Smooth Muscles 1. Smooth muscles- non-striated make up internal organs and blood vessels 2. Involuntary – no control 3.Contract and relax slowly 4. Example- small intestine, stomach

Cardiac Muscle 1. Cardiac muscle- found only in the heart 2. Involuntary 3. Striations 4. Heart muscle

TYPE OF MUSCLE Voluntary or nonvoluntary Striated or non- striated Examples: SKELETAL MUSCLE CARDIAC MUSCLE SMOOTH MUSCLE Voluntary Involuntary Striated Non- Striated Biceps, hamstrings, abdominals Heart muscle Liver, intestines, kidneys
