The Coordinate Plane
2
A coordinate plane is formed when two number lines intersect. The coordinate plane is used to locate points. The two number lines meet at a right angle at their zero point. What is the Coordinate Plane? Origin (0,0), the point at which the number lines intersect x-axis: the horizontal number line y-axis: the vertical number line Origin (0,0), the point at which the number lines intersect y-axis: the vertical number line x-axis: the horizontal number line Quadrant II Quadrant IVQuadrant III Quadrant I
3
Quadrants are four sections of the coordinate plane. What is the Coordinate Plane? Origin (0,0), the point at which the number lines intersect y-axis: the vertical number line x-axis: the horizontal number line Quadrant II Quadrant IVQuadrant III Quadrant I
4
An ordered pair of numbers is used to collate any point on a coordinate plane. (4,5) The first number is call the x-coordinate; it means to move to the right or left of the horizontal number line. The second number is call the y-coordinate; it means to move up or down along the vertical number line. Ordered Pair
5
Example: point A Step 1: Start at the origin. Step 2: Move right on the x- axis to find the x-coordinate of the point, which is 2 Step 3: Move up the y-axis to find the y-coordinate, which is 7. The ordered pair for point A is (2,7) Write the ordered pair that names each point. Identify Ordered Pairs A D C B
6
Example: point B Step 1: Start at the origin. Step 2: Move right on the x- axis to find the x-coordinate of the point, which is 7 0 Step 3: Move up the y-axis to find the y-coordinate, which is 08 The ordered pair for point B is (2,7) Find the ordered pair for point B and C. Write the ordered pair that names each point. Identify Ordered Pairs A D C B
7
Graph (5,3) Step 1: Start at the origin. Step 2: Since the x- coordinate is 5, move 5 units to the right. Step 3: Since the y- coordinate is 3, move 3 units up. Draw a dot. Write the ordered pair that names each point. Graph Ordered Pairs
8
Graph (-5,-3) Step 1: Start at the origin. Step 2: Since the x- coordinate is -5, move 5 units to the left. Step 3: Since the y- coordinate is -3, move 3 units down. Draw a dot. Write the ordered pair that names each point. Graph Ordered Pairs
9
Write the ordered pair corresponding to each point on the graph. Then state the quadrant or axis on which each point is located. Graph Ordered Pairs A B K F I L D E H J G C
