How do we acquire language? “For Chomsky and other linguists, what we acquire is a grammar... a set of of rules people use to produce and comprehend a language. Speakers of a language are not usually consciously aware of the rules they use. They can put sentences together and they can understand what others say, but they can’t usually tell you how they do it.” Between Worlds p. 55

The Natural Approach The natural approach views language as a vehicle for communicating meanings and and messages (Krashen 1985). Classroom are organized around activities that involve the students in real language situations, which give them a chance to explore and create.

Activities for the ESL classroom It is important to incorporate different media to promote the world they live in. Music/Audio : Lyrics represent ideas of society. Interviews help students listen for patterns in participants’ descriptions as they talk about life’s experiences. Cameras allow students to capture events and make inquiries. Art/Sculpture use a range of media to create an artifact that fits a goal or idea and explain its purpose. Computer Multimedia Tools empowers the student to generate new layers of meaning from grander ideas.
