Relative Clauses We can use relative pronouns to join two English sentences. They introduce the relative clauses. The relative clauses give more information about something or someone.

Relative Clauses We use Relative Pronouns (who,whose,which,that) and Relative Adverbs (where,when,why,that) to introduce relative clauses. We use relative clauses to identify/describe the person/thing/place in the main clause.

I have many friends. They are helpful. I have many friends who are helpful.

We use ‘who’ or ‘that’ to refer to people
Nancy lives next door. She has a lot of pets. Nancy who/that lives next door has a lot of pets Charles Dickens is a writer. He wrote Oliver Twist . Charles Dickens is a writer who/that wrote Oliver Twist.

We use ‘which’ or ‘that’ to refer to things, objects or animals
Yesterday, you gave me a sandwich. It was delicious. Yesterday you gave me a sandwich which/that was delicious. A flamingo is a bird. It lives in a warm climate. A flamingo is a bird which/that lives in a warm climate.

That’s the man. His car was stolen
We use whose instead of using possessive adjectives (my, your, his, etc.) with people, objects and animals in order to show possession That’s the man. His car was stolen That’s the man whose car was stolen. That’s the woman. Her house caught fire yesterday. That’s the woman whose house caught fire yesterday. The woman is very happy. Her son got the highest grade in the university exam. The woman whose son got the highest grade in the university exam is happy

We use where to refer to a place
We will meet today in the restaurant. We met there yesterday. We will meet today in the restaurant where we met yesterday. This is the house. I was born there. This is the house where I was born.
