Clean School Bus USA and Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel Dale Aspy, EPA Region 4 February 10, 2006

2 ULTRA LOW SULFUR DIESEL: WHY? ULSD is needed to reduce emissions from existing engines and enable new diesel emission control technologies

3 ULTRA LOW SULFUR DIESEL: WHEN? ULSD will be commercially available by October 15, 2006 or earlier. All 2007 and newer diesels must be fueled by ULSD. It will be produced by refiners by June 1, 2006 and in terminals by September 1, 2006.

4 ULTRA LOW SULFUR DIESEL: WHAT? ULSD has less than 15 ppm sulfur Lubricity specification < 520 HFRR by D 6079 from ASTM D 975 Aromatics: Now about 15-40% but can drop by 3-4% in ULSD. Extreme cases below 10%.

5 ULTRA LOW SULFUR DIESEL: WHERE? ULSD is required nationally. Refiners have indicated they will be able to supply. Contact your fuel supplier. All 2007 and newer vehicles must use it.

6 ULTRA LOW SULFUR DIESEL: WHO? All 2007 and newer diesels must use ULSD Pumps must be labeled with type of diesel DPF equipped buses

7 ULTRA LOW SULFUR DIESEL: HOW? Planning and preparation will critical. Discuss issues with fuel suppliers Prepare tanks, pumps, pipes Consult engine suppliers

8 Maintenance Practices Good maintenance is necessary to maintain low emissions and proper engine performance. Exhaust leaks should be sealed. Before installing aftertreatment technologies, oil consumption should be monitored and should not exceed engine manufacturer specifications. Crankcase oil burning systems may not be used with aftertreatment technologies.

9 Maintenance Practices Fuel Filters may need replacement when introducing new fuels –Biodiesel typically requires tank cleaning and filter replacement –ULSD – filter replacement may be advisable New engine technologies may require periodic maintenance crankcase emission control systems may have filter change intervals diesel particulate filters may need periodic cleaning

10 Proactive Vehicle Maintenance Practices Experience indicates be proactive Check maintenance records for seal replacement at recommended intervals with recommended materials-specify materials

11 Infrastructure Considerations Tank cleaning or preparation Manifolds and valve considerations Power take offs Hoses Consult Fuel provider!
