6 International Health Policy Program -Thailand Principles for the promotion of healthy diets and physical activity - comprehensive and address all major dietary and physical activity risks from multi-sectoral perspective - optimal mix of actions that are in accord with national capabilities, laws and economic realities - have a central steering role in developing strategies to ensure that actions are implemented and monitoring their impact over the long term - Ministry of Health have a crucial convening role-bringing together other ministries - multi-sectoral working group; government needs to work together with the private sector, health professional bodies, consumer groups, academics, the research community and other nongovernmental bodies - a life-course perspective on NCDs prevention and control is critical (from fetus to old age) - strategy should explicitly address equality and diminish disparities e.g. poorest communities or population groups - draw substantially on existing international standards that provide a reference in international trade (e.g. marketing of unhealthy food across national boundaries) 6
