2 What is the National Register?  The official list of the Nation’s cultural resources worthy of preservation  Part of the national effort to identify, evaluate, and protect important historic resources.  Federal program administered by the National Park Service in partnership with each state’s Office of Historic Preservation  Established in 1966 with passage of the National Historic Preservation Act

8 Who can nominate a property?

10 Can a property be listed if an owner’s objects?

11 Depends On: Ownership How many owners object

12 Does the nomination process stop if the owner objects?

13 National Register nominations can be heard by the State Historical Resources Commission even if a private owner objects to the listing. It is possible for these properties to receive a determination of eligibility by the Keeper of the National Register in Washington, D.C.

14 What is a Historic District? A significant concentration, linkage, or continuity of sites, buildings, structures, or objects united historically or aesthetically by plan or physical development.

18 Why Register a Property?

19 Benefits  Fosters pride of place and appreciation of cultural heritage  Maintains and enhances property values  Establishes eligibility for federal funding and tax incentives  Provides economic and other incentives to promote conservation and preservation  Sustains or improves quality of life by maintaining neighborhood character

20 Common Misconceptions  Federal or state government assumes property rights in your building  Property value will go down.  You must open your property to the public.  Large sums of money are available to assist owners and local agencies in rehabilitating National Register properties.
