2 2 Presentation Purpose  Propose a community art project for Edina (next slides)  Get feedback from the Edina Public Art Committee regarding whether to move ahead  Agree on next steps

3 3 Project Proposal Benefits:  Enhance the beauty of Edina public spaces  Showcase a community art project  Promote active living  Demonstrate a bicycle-friendly community  Align with the City of Edina Comprehensive Bicycle Transportation Plan by beautifying key bicycle infrastructure improvements (such as Promenade) Objective is to complete and install bicycle-themed tile mosaics created by Edina Residents under sponsorship of the Edina Public Art Committee. 4 4 Background Spring/Summer 2007: Bike Edina Task Force, Community Design Group, and Mosaic-on-a-Stick initiated a bicycle tile art project The project supplemented public comment and public education for developing the City of Edina Bicycle Transportation Plan, submitted as part of the City planning efforts in 2007 2008: The Bicycle Plan was approved in fall of 2008 2009-2010: The mosaics are finished for the main art subject, but are unfinished for background tile, grouting, mounting, and installing. 5 5 Project Scope Scope:  Complete solid-colored “background tiles” for 8 – 12 unique mosaics (such as the one pictured above)  Identify and get approval for placing  Determine costs and obtain funding  Engage Edina Art Center for storage, instruction, and consulting for materials and techniques  Bike Edina Task Force to recruit labor for completing the mosaics; a point person will be identified to work with other groups (Public Art Committee, Edina Art Center, City of Edina staff) Approach is for the Bike Edina Task Force to partner with the Edina Public Art Committee. 6 6 General Project Timing For consideration  2009:  August: Propose project, ideally identify the Edina Public Art Committee as a sponsor  September: Obtain permission for Kirk Johnson of Bike Edina Task Force to move incomplete mosaics from Mosaic-on-a-Stick (St. Paul) to Edina Art Center for storage pending project completion.  October – November: Develop project charter, identify sponsors, identify stakeholders, get approval from necessary decision makers.  December: Prepare final design, identify a budget, get approval  2010:  Complete the projects  Install  Celebrate!
