Tom Torlakson State Superintendent of Public Instruction What Is the CACFP At Risk After School Program? “The Child and Adult Care Food Program”* Provides reimbursement for a meal and/or a snack in after school programs. * Funded by USDA and administered by the California Department of Education, Nutrition Services Division

Tom Torlakson State Superintendent of Public Instruction New Reimbursement for Meals! Prior to October 1, 2010, agencies could only get reimbursed for a snack. New legislation allows reimbursement for a meal and a snack!

Tom Torlakson State Superintendent of Public Instruction What is the CACFP At Risk Program? cont. Operates after school during the regular school year. May operate on weekends, holidays, or school vacations. May not operate in the summer, unless kids are in a Year Round school and on track in the summer.

Tom Torlakson State Superintendent of Public Instruction Can I serve an NSLP snack and a CACFP snack? Yes, but you can not get reimbursed twice for the same snack. Why not serve a meal instead of two snacks?

Public, Private non-Profit, or For-Profit Organizations For profit organizations* *Must also operate a CACFP child care center in which 25% of children receive subsidized child care OR are income eligible for free/reduced-price meals.

Must be located in the attendance area of a school in which 50 percent of enrolled students are eligible for free or reduced-price meals. Tom Torlakson State Superintendent of Public Instruction Meal Components Breakfast Milk – 1 cup Vegetable, Fruit, or Full Strength Juice – ½ cup Grain/Bread – 1 slice Lunch or Supper Same as above, except ¾ cup veg or fruit, instead of ½ cup Add 2 oz. meat/meat alternate

Tom Torlakson State Superintendent of Public Instruction 3 Steps to Apply 1. Contact a CACFP Program Specialist for initial screening. Laurie Pennings: 916-324-7133 2. Submit requested documents. 3. Obtain a CNIPS ID and password and submit an online application.

Tom Torlakson State Superintendent of Public Instruction Streamlined Application for Schools Waiver for the assessment of VCA (Viability, Capability & Accountability) And no preapproval visit needed.

Tom Torlakson State Superintendent of Public Instruction Annual Training Requirement Each year sponsors must attend either an online or in-person training.

Tom Torlakson State Superintendent of Public Instruction Program Compliance Failure to follow USDA regulations can lead to Serious Deficiency. Your agency and responsible principals could be placed on the National Disqualification List and be unable to participate in a federal program for 7 years.
