The treatment of early-stage breast cancer can include lumpectomy, or the removal of a tumor with surrounding normal tissue. A partial mastectomy, can leave a significant defect such as bird’s beak deformity in the breast especially after radiotherapy
3
Oncoplastic breast cancer surgery incorporates the techniques of breast cancer surgery and plastic surgery, Allowing the operating team to reshape the breast tissue at the time of lumpectomy to achieve the best possible cosmetic result. In AMC we do most of those simple and advanced reconstruction procedures within a team included plastic surgeon colleague.
4
The major advantage of having oncoplastic surgery is having the ability to remove cancer without leaving a disfiguring defect in the breast. After tumor removal, the team reshapes the remaining glandular tissue to maintain the shape and contour of the breast. This achieves a normal-appearing breast shape after lumpectomy and consistency of normal appearing persists even after radiotherapy.
5
Who is a candidate for oncoplastic breast surgery?
Any woman who is eligible for breast-conserving surgery (lumpectomy or partial mastectomy) may be a candidate for oncoplastic surgery. In addition, some women facing possible mastectomy due to larger tumor size may be appropriate patients for an oncoplastic procedure.
6
What are some other advantages of oncoplastic breast cancer surgery?
Oncoplastic breast cancer surgery has a other benefits: It offers women with larger tumors to preserve the breast. Because more tissue can be removed using oncoplastic techniques, mastectomy may be avoided for some women.
7
It should be kept in mind that choosing oncoplastic breast cancer surgery does not preclude a patient from having additional surgery in the future.
