3 What is Speech Team? Original Content A speech created by the student (time limits vary) Editorial Commentary – take a position (1 ½ - 2 min) Expository – inform the audience (6 ½ - 7 min) Impromptu – think on your feet (1 – 5 min) Oratory – memorized, to persuade (6 ½ - 7 min) A safe place to develop public speaking skills and to develop confidence in front of groups through 2 different types of speaking Interpretive Reading (Interp) A reading from a book, play or poetry (6 ½ - 7 min) Dramatic Humorous Duo Children’s Storybook

4 Speech Season Speech Fundamentals Begins Sept 25 th For new members only Mondays, 2:05 – 3:00 in 7A 8 weeks Begins Sept 15 – Nov 17 9/15; 9/29; 10/6; 10/13 10/27; 11/3; 11/10; 11/17 No class 9/22 or 10/20 Speech Sundays Begins Sept 28 th * Sundays, 4:15 – 5:45 in StL Central Wing 5 weeks prior to StL Tournament and then after Sun, 10/12: new members join *for returning members Speech Tournaments Sat, 11/8: StL Tournament Sat, 12/13: Bishop Blanchet* Sat, 1/17: Seattle Prep* Sat, 2/7: Eastside Catholic* *Priority is given to 8 th, then 7 th, then 6 th

6 Parent Leads & Faculty Advisor Roles DO Provide the structure for students and communication with you to improve the students Public Speaking Provide a structure and guidance for selecting pieces and writing speeches Ensure coaching and editing help is available for students Commit A LOT of time to Speech Team Appreciate feedback on how things are working for the students DON’T Select or type the Interp pieces for the students Write original content speeches for students A Word about Providing Feedback Please be thoughtful Use the Speech Team +/EBI approach (It would be Even Better If you did _____)

7 Parental Involvement is Expected Speech isn’t a graded class!...Please: Note: You will be more involved than in many other activities Volunteer in some way, shape, or form Help your kids to pick Interp material and edit it to fit within the timeline Guide them in their original content pieces Help them to select, organize, outline and edit their original content pieces Let them write it, but help them to get started Add resources to our Speech Library

8 Volunteer Roles Coaches Time commitment: 12-16 hours 4:15 – 5:45 Sundays 8 sessions prior to Blanchet tournament Dec 13 th 3 sessions Jan 11 th – Feb 1 st Training: Mostly on-the-job with experienced coaches Intro to Coaching Sept 28 th 3:30 – 4:15 Judges Time commitment: varies by tournament Judge at 1 or all to tournaments ½ to full day (4-8 hours) per tournament Training required: 2 hours maximum Other Roles StL Tournament co-lead Editor: 6-8 hours, mostly at home Impromptu topics

9 Training Requirements Mandatory Safe Environment (aka Called to Protect for Ministries): Tuesday, 9/23/14 06:30 PM at St. Louise Other classes: http://seattle.setanet.org/classes.php Blanchet Judging: Sat, Dec 6 th 9:00 – 11:00 am -- OR -- Mon, Dec 8 th 6:00 – 8:00 pm Other Judge training prior to Seattle Prep and Eastside Catholic IF you aren’t trained at Blanchet Additional Intro to Coaching: Sept 28 th, 3:30 – 4:15, StL Central Wing
