EROSION FOLDABLE
3
EROSION IS Process that moves weathered sediments from one location to another Sediments are either weathered chemically or mechanically The four agents of erosion are: Wind Water Gravity Glacier
4
COMMON CHARAC TERISTICS
Carry sediments when they have energy of motion Drop their load of sediments when energy of motion decreases Deposition is the dropping of sediments
5
GRAVITY Mass movement is when materials move down slope
Can be very fast or very slow
6
SLUMP Slump takes place on steep slopes when material slips downward as one large mass leaving a curved scar Occurs when the material under weakens
7
CREEP Very slow movement
Common in areas of freezing and thawing since as the ground freezes, small sediments are pushed upwards Usually seen with fences and utility poles
9
ROCKSLIDE Happens when large blocks break loose from steep slopes and tumble quickly to the bottom
10
MUDFLOWS/MUDSLIDES Usually occur in relatively dry areas where weathering had formed thick layers of sediments With a heavy rain the water adds mass and makes the sediments slippery Occurs on steep slopes mudslide
11
WATER Erodes more sediments than any other agent
The more energy of movement the more is eroded When the water loses energy the sediments are dropped Alluvial fan is shaped like a triangle and is deposited in rivers Delta is deposited when it empties into an ocean, gulf or lake

14
RILL AND GULLY EROSION Begins when a small stream forms during a heavy rain. Carries away plants and soil If it happens frequently it will evolve into a gully Gully erosion, the channel is deeper and broader
15
RILL EROSION
16
GULLY EROSION
17
SHEET EROSION Happens when rainwater flows over a fairly flat area or gentle slope When the water loses its energy of motion, the sediments cover the land like a sheet
18
LAND PRONE TO EROSION
19
STEEP SLOPES When you build you destroy the vegetation which helps to keep soil in place Not much to anchor your house to

TERRACES
22
GLACIERS It is a moving mass of ice and snow Two types are continental and valley Continental cover about 10% of the surface and are found at polar regions Valley glaciers are located in mountainous regions Move slowly and act as a bulldozer Plucking is when they pick up rocks and scrape the surface of what they move over
23
CONTINENTAL
24
VALLEY
25
U-SHAPED VALLEY
27
GLACIAL GROOVES
28
TILL Deposited when it loses energy of motion
29
MORAINE
30
OUTWASH
31
WIND *common in deserts, beaches and plowed fields *deflation when wind picks up fine sand and leaves behind pebbles
32
ABRASION is similar to sandblasting
33
LOESS IS A LARGE DEPOSIT OF FINE SAND
DUNES ARE THE MOST COMMON FORMED WHEN SAND PILES UP DUE TO AN OBSTACLE CONSTANTLY CHANGING
