Lesson 4 Pedestrian and Bicycle Crash Types
2
What is a crash? CRASH - event in which a bicyclist or ped. greets the ground, a motor vehicle, or any other solid object in a way that can result in bodily harm &/or property damage Not a accident Crashes are preventable
3
Crash Avoidance Process Step 1 - Search Step 2 - Detect Step 3 - Evaluate Step 4 - Decide Step 5 - Action
4
Pedalcyclist Fatality Data - 2002 1st automobile crash in 1896 47,000 died in traffic crashes since 1932 2002 - 662 were killed & 48,000 injured in traffic crashed 2002 was 8% lower than the 723 fatalities reported in 1992 Pedalcyclist accounted for 12% of all non-motorist traffic fatalities. Peds 86%, remaining 2% skateboarders, etc.

Summarize the 1996 data Peds Data 1.Who more? 2.How fatal? 3.When more alcohol/drug crashes? 4.Time? 5.Where? 6.Lanes? 7.Role of intersections? 8.Ped at fault? 9.Motor vehicle at fault? 10.Types of ped crashes?

Summarize the 1996 data Bike-Motor Vehicle Data 1.Where? 2.Who? 3.How fatal? 4.Role of alcohol? 5.When? 6.Where? 7.Lanes? 8.Bikes at fault? 9.Motor vehicle at fault? 10.Types of bike-motor crashes? 11.Most frequent?

Pedestrian and Bicycle Crash Analysis Tool (PBCAT) The Pedestrian and Bicycle Crash Analysis Tool (PBCAT) is a crash typing software product intended to assist state and local pedestrian/ bicycle coordinators, planners and engineers with improving walking and bicycling safety through the development and analysis of a database containing details associated with crashes between motor vehicles and pedestrians or bicyclists. http://www.walkinginfo.org/pc/pbc at.htm

EXERCISE - Design a Countermeasure Program Design a program that specifically provides countermeasures aimed at reducing 1 common bike &/or ped crash types on the SFA Campus. Countermeasures include: nite time crashes, mid-block crashes, intersection crashes, id of hazardous, crashes based on X of day Be specific! How eval if effective?
9
EXERCISE - Design a Countermeasure Program Using crash data from Piedmont Park answer the following Qs: Did peds &/or bikes have more crashes at intersections or midblocks? Did peds &/or bikes have more crashes in day or nite? Which type of bike crash occurred more? What time of day were there more crashes for bikes &/or peds? Most frequent location for crashes for both bikes & peds? PROVIDE COUNTERMEASURES FOR IMPROVING SAFETY.
