The Facts Road accidents cause life-changing injuries including loss of limbs, spinal injuries and head injuries. Road accidents are a leading cause of acquired brain injury among older children and young people. Road accidents remain the leading cause of accidental death for children. (Child Accident Prevention Trust 2013)

The Statistics - Injuries In 2011, 2,352 under 16s sustained serious injuries on Britain’s roads – that’s around 45 each week. Road accidents led to 6,372 emergency hospital admissions among 0-15 year olds in 2011. This is equivalent to around 123 admissions every week. (Child Accident Prevention Trust 2013)

The Statistics - Deaths 60 children aged 0-15 years were killed in road accidents in Britain in 2011. Of these 60 fatalities in 2011, half were pedestrians. (Child Accident Prevention Trust 2013)

The Impact of Speed A recent analysis of the role of vehicle speed in pedestrian fatalities in Great Britain found that 85% of pedestrians killed when struck by cars died in collisions that occurred at impact speeds below 40mph 45% of pedestrians died at impact speeds of less than 30 mph and 5% at speeds below 20 mph. The Impact of Speed A pedestrian who is hit by a car travelling at between 30 mph and 40 mph is between 3.5 and 5.5 times more likely to be killed than if hit by a car travelling at below 30 mph. However, about half of pedestrian fatalities occur at impact speeds of 30 mph or below. (RoSPA)
