11 CHILDHOOD INJURY PREVENTION CONFERENCE Child Pedestrian Injuries: The Facts 1,000 young people die a day on the roads: one every 90 seconds More than 133,000 children between the ages of 5-14 years are killed each year walking on roads (often to and from school) in developing countries. Road traffic injuries kill more children between the ages of 5-14 years than HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis or malaria. Child pedestrians have the highest rates of death and injury in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. 11
