43210 In addition to level 3.0 and above and beyond what was taught in class, the student may: · Make connection with other concepts in math · Make connection with other content areas. The student will write, solve and graph systems of equations and inequalities. - Solve systems of linear equations graphically, with substitution and with elimination method. - Solve systems that have no solutions or many solutions and understand what those solutions mean. - Find where linear and quadratic functions intersect. - Use systems of equations or inequalities to solve real world problems. The student will be able to: - Solve a system graphically. - With help the student will be able to solve a system algebraically. With help from the teacher, the student has partial success with solving a system of linear equations and inequalities. Even with help, the student has no success understandi ng the concept of systems of equations. Focus 5 Learning Goal – (HS.A-CED.A.3, HS.A-REI.C.5, HS.A-REI.C.6, HS.A- REI.D.11, HS.A-REI.D.12): Students will write, solve and graph linear systems of equations and inequalities.

SOUTHERN CUISINE Your family goes to a Southern-style restaurant for dinner. There are 6 people in your family. Some people ordered the chicken dinner for $14 and some ordered the steak dinner for $17. If the total bill was $99, how many people ordered each dinner? Chicken = x, Steak = y x + y = 6 14x + 17y = 99 -14x – 14y = -84 14x + 17y = 99 3y = 15 y = 5 One person ordered chicken and five people ordered steak.

COOKOUT You are buying the meat for a cookout. You need to buy 8 packages of meat. A package of hotdogs cost $1.60 and a package of hamburger costs $5.00. If you spend a total of $23.00, how many packages of each can you buy? Hotdogs = x, hamburgers = y x + y = 8 1.6x + 5y = 23 -1.6x – 1.6y = -12.8 1.6x + 5y = 23 3.4y = 10.2 y = 3 You need to buy 3 packages of hamburgers and 5 packages of hotdogs.

DIMENSIONS OF A RECTANGLE The perimeter of the rectangle is 20 in. The perimeter of the inscribed triangle is 20 in. Find the dimensions of the rectangle. Rectangle: 2L + 2W = 20 Triangle: L + 2 + L + 2 + W = 20 2L + W = 16 -2L – 2W = -20 2L + W = 16 -W = -4 W = 4 L W L + 2 2L+ 2(4) = 20 2L = 12 L = 6 The width is 4 in, the length is 6 inches.

DRIVING TO GRANDMA’S HOUSE You live in Pennsylvania and your grandparents live in Ohio. When you are in Pennsylvania, you drive an average rate of 55 mph. When you are in Ohio, you drive an average rate of 65 mph. The entire trip of 295 miles takes 5 hours. How long does it take to reach the Pennsylvania-Ohio border? How long does it take to get from the border to your grandparents’ house? Time in Pennsylvania = x Time in Ohio = y x + y = 5 55x + 65y = 295 -55x – 55y = -275 55x + 65y = 295 10y = 20 y = 2 3 hours in Pennsylvania and 2 hours in Ohio.
