4 What does it do: It is a word that describes a noun or pronoun. Adjectives slightly change the meanings of these words. For example: A house could become a small house or a large, wooden house

6 When adjectives modify nouns, they usually come directly before the nouns. However, sometimes they may come after. Examples: She saw a bright, smiling face. The room, narrow and dark, frightened us.

7 Adjectives usually come after a linking verb when they modify pronouns. However, sometimes they may come before. Examples:They are happy and talkative. Quiet and sullen, he sat in a corner.

8 1. Ducks, geese, and swans are aquatic birds. 2. All waterfowl swim and float. 3. These birds have webbed feet. What word do these adjectives modify or describe?

9 Three common adjectives – the, a, and an – are known as articles. Articles ALWAYS come before the nouns they modify. They answer the question – Which one? Examples:the canoe the swan a pond an old sweater

10 Nouns can sometimes be used as adjectives. A noun used as an adjective usually comes directly before another noun and answers the question What kind? or Which one? Examples: Noun – shoe Used as Adjective: a shoe salesperson (What kind?)

13 Find the Proper Adjectives: 1. Snow geese live in the Arctic region surround the North Pole. 2. Some spend winters along the Atlantic coast. 3. The Canada goose is another popular North American bird. 4. It usually lays its eggs during warm March or April days.

14 Compound Adjectives Compound adjectives are made up of more than one word. Examples: a well-known actress, a freshwater lake
