Thumbprint drawing vocabulary review… and some extra goodies for our next project!

What element of art is most important in this image?

Jhaya Esser, Midnight in Bristol LINE is a point in motion

How do we make lines more interesting when that is the main element in an artwork?

Raoul Dufy, Personnages a ascot Line Variation! How does this artist vary his lines?

LINE VARIATION is how you change a line so that your lines look different from one another. (Thick and thin, long and short, curvy and flat, textured and smooth)

Tom Wesselmann, Still Life Red Curtain, 1987 When a line creates a border, it becomes a SHAPE.

Tom Wesselmann, Still Life Red Curtain, 1987 What kinds of shapes are in this painting are organic? Geometric?

GEOMETRIC SHAPES are shapes that have mathematical names or can be broken into shapes that have mathematical names. (Circle, square, triangle…think of geometry class!)

ORGANIC SHAPES are usually found in nature. They have curvy lines.

You chose two primary colors that you used to color the background. What is a primary color?

PRIMARY COLORS create all other colors.

PRIMARY means _______ (what number?)

1 (primary) + 1 (primary) = + + + = ?

1 (primary) + 1 (primary) = SECONDARY COLOR + + + = = =

SECONDARY COLORS are made from mixing two primary colors together. Any guesses on what it’s called when you mix a primary and a secondary color together?

TERTIARY (yes, that means 3!) or INTERMEDIATE COLORS Examples: Red-orange Yellow-green Blue-Violet What other tertiary colors are there?

When we tore the mask off our thumbnail drawings, we left a blank space. What is that called?

NEGATIVE SPACE Empty space in an artwork. This is usually the background around the main subject.

Sometimes, the negative space and the positive space can be confusing…on purpose!

We also mentioned “composition” when we were talking about the placement of the negative space. What is COMPOSITION?

COMPOSITION is the overall arrangement of the visual elements on a two-dimensional surface. Similar to how a composer arranges sounds to create a musical composition.

In our next COMPOSITION, we will be creating a printed image that shows depth. For tomorrow, bring in your favorite quote. Be thinking…what images could you use to show that quote?
