5 Workshop Goals To help each other in the teaching of math and science so students better understand basic mathematical principles and practices and their application to and use in physical sciences –To help students derive and understand mathematical relationships, when possible –To help students understand the power of prediction from mathematical models

12 Assessments Questions Development of lesson plans and their incorporation into unit plans –Anyone interested in SDSU’s Unit Plan template? Follow-up meetings (electronic and at Huron)

13 Learning Outcomes: Participants will be able to incorporate “Crosscutting Concepts” from the Framework in their science and mathematics lessons. Participants will be able to incorporate “Standard Mathematical Practices” from the SD Common Core for Mathematics in their science and mathematics lessons.

14 Evaluation Procedures: Participants will be evaluated on their lesson plans and how effectively they incorporated the Crosscutting Concepts and Standard Mathematical Practices. Lessons will be shared among the participants. Vertical and lateral teams will be asked to build on team member’s lessons. Two lesson plans will be required. Participation is also a requirement and participants are expected to log 30 hours of activities.

15 Some General Stuff Dorm (Caldwell) –Check-in ASAP (over lunch break today) –Lost key fee is $75!!!! Meals (VBR or WW, mention “Cosmic Connections”) –Breakfast: 7:30-8:30 am –Lunch: Noon – 1 pm –Supper: 5:00 – 6:00 pm Breaks in DEH 269 –Around 10:30 am and 3:30 pm but will vary

16 More General Stuff Internet access –use “Openwire” available in dorm lobby workshop rooms union Others? Parking (do not need permit in commuter lots) –Do NOT use handicap/reserved parking spots Using Wellness Center Facilities –$8/day fee –Pay at desk on 1st floor by exercise equipment

17 Some More General Stuff What to do in the evening –SDSU Art Museum open until 5 pm –Ag Heritage Museum open until 5 pm –Dairy Bar (SDSU Ice Cream, cheese) open until 5 pm –Downtown and area shopping and refreshments –Movies (http://www.brookings.com/cinema5 )http://www.brookings.com/cinema5 –Walk through McCrory Gardens and parks –Thursday night - “Music on Main” by Nick’s –Sunday night concerts in Pioneer park –Walmart and HyVee are open 24 hrs. –HOMEWORK –PRT: Beauty and the Beast (July 11, 12 @BVPAC 7:30)

18 Framework of Workshop Begin at 8:30 am Afternoons begin at 1 pm; end at 5 (except Star observing evening – Monday? – with 8:30 till ???) Stipends: $90/day based on participation Unit Plans/Lessons for presentation posted on Wiki by Tuesday, July 17, 2012 at midnight (electronic sharing) –Help you use these techniques and materials BOR and evaluator visit on Friday Please share information upon your return to school Consider presenting at Huron, Feb. 7-9, 2013 Let us know how things are going Wiki Support (and posting) HAVE FUN!

19 Summer Course Requirements (2 credits or 30 hours - optional) Develop two lesson plans based on the constructivist 5E model –Will be discussed shortly –Post on Wiki –Both incorporate Astronomy –One lesson needs to be interdisciplinary …coordinated between math and science teacher or across grade level Incorporate them into a UNIT plan –Could create concept map for unit (VUE)VUE
