Science stations with approximate Internet coverage area
Actual boundaries vary: Coverage can be affected by atmospheric conditions and sea state Expected coverage: North to 76-78N at 180W, less further east East to W at the coast, less further north
3
Internet service via Ku-Band VSAT
Kbps: drastically slower service than you're used to at home... shared with everybody in the science party. Internet access is via kiosk computers. Can do: Basic web browsing Webmail (Gmail, Yahoo, institutional mail) Polarscience.net 3Mb/message size limit FTP Personal phone calls via paid phone card
4
Internet service via Ku-Band VSAT
Can't do: Audio/video streaming VPN Facebook Skype and similar services Exceptions for outreach personnel may be possible if arranged in advance (we can't bend the laws of physics) Laptops, phones, tablets, etc. will have local network access only, not Internet.
5
Any applications that go off the ship from your laptop/computer/phone etc. will NOT work onboard.
Services with “Cloud” in the name Automatic backup Dropbox / other file sync services Skype VPN Ssh/rsync

This is our Internet valve. It is not real.
7
This is real! Internet access workstations are available in public spaces.
8
Outside of Internet service area: all is not lost
9
Iridium satellite data connection
True global coverage, very slow speed (9.6Kbps) No web browsing Polarscience.net can be up to 400Kb per message (text, one or two small pictures); no limit on number of messages FTP for critical files (e.g., National Ice Center images) can be arranged in advance
10
Resources available onboard Accessible via user devices: laptop, phone, etc.
Wifi network access in work and berthing areas Polarscience.net (can send/receive both onboard, and off ship with size limits) Mapserver (like GIS, with live ship data) Data from ship's instrumentation Printing/scanning File share Chat (limited to certain clients, list is available) New York Times Digest “Life onboard” information...And more
