7 6. What are the three differences between RNA and DNA?
single stranded ribose sugar nitrogen base uracil double stranded deoxyribose sugar nitogen base thymine

8 7. Where is DNA found in the cell? Where is RNA found in the cell?
nucleus mitochondria/chloroplasts cytosol during mitosis/meiosis mRNA = nucleus or cytoplasm tRNA = nucleus or cytoplasm rRNA = within the nucleolus of the nucleus or the ribosomes of the cytoplasm

9 8. Name the three types of RNA and what they do.
mRNA = carries the message of DNA out of the nucleus & into the cytoplasm. rRNA = a structural component of a ribosome tRNA = delivers amino acids to the growing polypeptide chain

10 9. Draw an mRNA strand that is complementary to the DNA strand AATTGC.
UUA ACG

11 10. What are the steps of transcription?
1. A portion (gene) of the DNA double helix unzips. 2. RNA polymerase uses one of the DNA strands as a template to assemble the complementary nucleotides of mRNA. 3. When transcription is over, the completed mRNA molecule leaves the nucleus through a nuclear pore so translation can take place. 4. The DNA double helix zips back together.
