A private, independent institute founded in 1930 by the Bambergers. Four Schools: School of Natural Sciences, School of Mathematics, School of Historical Studies, and School of Social Science. Created ideal conditions to encourage original scholarship. Institute for Advanced Study Princeton, New Jersey

Best minds recruited from post-war Europe: Albert Einstein, J. Robert Oppenheimer, Kurt Gödel, John von Neumann, and many others. 21 Nobel laureates, 32 out of 45 Fields Medalists, and many winners of the Wolf or MacArthur prizes have been Institute Faculty or Members.
9
Work done at IAS revolutionized ways we live and understand the world. Examples: Einstein’s theory of relativity one of the first stored program computers was designed and built on the Institute’s campus; research from that project influenced development of today’s computers and computer software. The foundations of game theory, a powerful tool in economics, were formed at the Institute.
10
Top talents shifted intellectual epicenter from Europe to America. Princeton University derives enormous benefit from close proximity and cross fertilization with the Institute.

Founded by the National Science Foundation and the University of California, the Kavli Institute owes its success to its ability to attract the world’s leading scientists. Pioneering work in non-traditional areas has propelled the Santa Barbara campus from relative obscurity to world prominence.
