1932-1934 I taught for a year at Rutgers University, then became a research associate at the Geophysical Laboratory of Washington. I later joined the Princeton University faculty in 1934.

1934-1950 I joined the U.S. Navy during WWII, in which I climbed to the rank of rear admiral, and eventually was granted control of the USS Cape Johnson. I tracked almost every move I made in the ship using the new technology, called sonar, which later helped me develop my theory of seafloor spreading.

1950-1966 I finished my career at Princeton, also serving as the Geology Department Chair. I also visited Cambridge in 1960.

1960 During my time at Princeton, I made one of the (considered to be) greatest advancements of geological science history. I improved and ultimately advanced the theory of seafloor spreading, which shows that the Mid-Atlantic ridge is slowly spreading apart.
