3. Study 1: Katz and Braley 1933 Asked 100 male PU students to choose 5 traits to characterize various groups (Blacks, Jews, Japanese, Americans) List of 84 possible words. Considerable agreement among negative traits for other groups. Positive towards their own. Most white and had no contact with ethnic groups, so it was thought these stereotypes were learned. 4. Study 2: Gilbert 1951 Replicated earlier study. Not so much uniformity with the answers. Showed negative attitudes towards Japanese (still ingroup biasing). 5. Study 3: Karlins et al. 1969 Replicated the study again. The students objected with the task, but this time there was greater agreement that the 1951 study. 6. So what's the point? The Princeton Trilogy was attempting to make the point that stereotypes and prejudice is changing. That maybe things are going in the right direction. Find your own study that says maybe this really is not so crystal clear.
