3 Study 1: Katz and Braley 1933 Asked 100 male PU students to choose 5 traits to characterize various groups (Blacks, Jews, Japanese, Americans) List of 84 possible words. Considerable agreement among negative traits for other groups. Positive towards their own. Most white and had no contact with ethnic groups, so it was thought these stereotypes were learned. 4 Study 2: Gilbert 1951 Replicated earlier study. Not so much uniformity with the answers. Showed negative attitudes towards Japanese (still ingroup biasing). But the students showed irritation about being asked to make generalizations. Could indicate a social change was occurring. Explain the effects of stereotypes and their effect on behavior…..

5 Study 3: Karlins et al. 1969 Replicated the study again. The students objected with the task, but this time there was greater agreement that the 1951 study. Stereotyping came back….BUT it was more positive. Please note….knowing a stereotype and accepting it are VERY different things. Explain the effects of stereotypes and their effect on behavior…..

6 So what's the point? The Princeton Trilogy was attempting to make the point that stereotypes and prejudice is changing. That maybe things are going in the right direction. Find your own study that says maybe this really is not so crystal clear.
