Day One: Wednesday, November 19, 2014 Quiet Question: Type Two Prompt--- The teacher is going to read aloud the attached article from CNN entitled “Is Afghanistan really a ‘graveyard of empires?’” As the teacher does this, you should be using Active Reading Strategies. Then with your partner, you will use the information from the reading and your graphic organizer notes on Afghanistan from the last lesson to help you complete the Type Two Prompt. Select one of the possible ten political cartoons from the Class Set. Then answer the Reflection Questions.

Day One: Wednesday, November 19, 2014 Reflection Questions: A) What is the message of the political cartoon? Explain. How can you tell? Identify specifics from the political cartoon. B) What information from your notes and the reading support the message of the political cartoon? Identify and explain at least TWO examples. 1) 2) C) What information from your notes and the reading DO NOT support the message of the political cartoon? Identify and explain at least TWO examples. 1) 2) D) Based upon all we have learned about Afghanistan, do you agree or disagree with the cartoonist’s message? Why or why not?

Day One: Wednesday, November 19, 2014 Class: Pairs will share their thoughts. Use to transition to similar issues facing Iraq today. Today and tomorrow in the first part of the class period, we are going to watch an A and E Biography Documentary on Saddam Hussein from their Tyrants and Dictators Series on YouTube. It was published on June 27, 2014 and has a running time of 43:43 minutes. You will be taking notes on this documentary in the provided graphic organizer. The notes should be in either PENCIL, BLACK OR BLUE PEN.

Day One: Wednesday, November 19, 2014 Homework: To supplement and fill in the blanks about the history of Iraq not covered in the film, you will be reading and taking additional notes in either RED, ORANGE, PINK, OR PURPLE PEN from the photocopied supplemental reading. Again, this is to distinguish where the information comes from. Chunking: Night One: Wednesday, November 19 Read and take notes from pages 1-3 in the appropriate graphic organizer categories. Night Two: Thursday, November 20 Read and take notes from pages 5-9 in the appropriate graphic organizer categories. Will be checked on Friday, November 21

Day Two: Thursday, November 20, 2014 Class: We are going to finish the A and E Documentary on Saddam Hussein, and you should continue the note-taking. Class: For the rest of the class period, the teacher is going to do a modified PowerPoint Lecture on Iraq to add to your notes. Do this in either PENCIL, BLACK OR BLUE PEN. Topics Covered in Lecture: Iran-Iraq War and Role of America in War Genocide of Kurds Costs of the Second Iraq War Homework: You are to finish the reading and note-taking from the supplemental reading.

Day Three: Friday, November 21, 2014 Class: The teacher is going to finish the modified PowerPoint Lecture on Iraq, and you should finish adding to your notes. Class: We are going to watch a short documentary from BBC entitled “Our World The Battle for Northern Iraq with Yalda Hakim.” This was published on September 1, 1014 and has a running time of 23:02 minutes. It addresses the last category of the graphic organizer. Homework: You are going to complete a Timeline Activity developed by Mr. Hess. You are to go to the identified website and answer the 11 questions using the timeline and your knowledge of Iraq. This will be collected for a Formative Assessment grade the next class period. This is due the Monday you return from Fall Break!
