C RIME SEVERITY INDEX New method of quantifying crime Attaches higher weights to major crimes and lower weights to minor crimes It is a rate per population Includes drugs and criminal traffic offences Accommodates more than one crime per incident Accommodates more than one victim per violent incident Statistics Canada’s choice for measuring crime Easy to monitor changes in crime over time Three measures o Overall Crime Severity Index o Violent Crime Severity Index o Non-Violent Crime Severity Index
3
Findings Crime Severity Indices are calculated for Police Jurisdictions – this are no CSI Indices for Mississauga Peel Region ranked 37 th out of 208 on Overall CSI 103 rd our of 208 on Violent CSI 16 th out of 208 on Non-Violent CSI

C RIME RATES Traditional method of quantifying crime Rate per 10,000 persons No distinction between major and minor crimes Does not include drugs or criminal traffic offences Reports one crime per incident Findings Comparison with Canadian urban areas with populations over 15,000 - Mississauga (with and without airport) has lower Total Crime Rate Property Crime Rate Crimes Against Persons Rate
8
Comparison with Canadian urban areas with populations over 15,000 - Mississauga (with and without airport) has higher Robbery Rate than Mississauga ‘s Robbery Rank - ranked 10 th of 22 % of Mississauga Sherbrooke47.4 Trois-Rivieres49.4 Moncton53.0 Barrie53.1 Kingston53.8 St John's55.1 Quebec57.1 Guelph58.8 St Catherine’s78.2

I NCLUDING D EMOGRAPHICS Research suggests demographics that vary with crime rate Unemployment rate Male unemployment rate Young male unemployment rate Poverty rate Average education level Percent families with one parent Ethnic diversity rates …. The geography of Canada
26
Findings For Total Crime Rates As these variables increase, so do Total Crime Rates Percent aboriginals In B.C. – Population density In Quebec – Ethnic diversity
28
Findings For Property Crime Rates As these variables increase, so do Property Crime Rates Percent aboriginals In B.C. – Population density In Quebec – Ethnic diversity
30
Findings For Violent Crime Rates As these variables increase, so do Violent Crime Rates Percent aboriginals, much greater effect in the Maritimes In Quebec – Population density
32
Findings For Robbery Rates As these variables increase, so do Robbery Crime Rates Percent aboriginals, much greater effect in the Maritimes Ethnic diversity In Quebec – Population density
34
Findings For Overall Crime Severity Index As these variables increase, so do Overall Crime Severity Indices Percent aboriginals Percent of adults who have completed high school & nothing further Percent of households that are rented
35
Percent of adults who have not completed high school, greatest effect in B.C.& Maritimes Percent of mothers who are single, but not in B.C & only a small impact in Quebec In Quebec - Percent of adult males with no income In the Prairies, the Maritimes, and the North - Ethnic diversity In B.C. - Population size
36
Findings for Violent Crime Severity Indices As these variables increase, so do Violent Crime Severity Indices Percent of adults who have completed high school & nothing further Percent of households that are rented Percent aboriginals, greatest impact in Quebec Ethnic diversity, greatest effect in Maritimes
37
Percent of adults who have not completed high school, greatest effect in B.C.& Maritimes Everywhere but B.C. - Percent of mothers who are single Everywhere but the Maritimes - Percent of households in large apartment buildings In the North - Percent of adult males with no income In B.C. - Population size As median income increases, Violent CSI rate decreases
38
Findings for Non-Violent Crime Severity Indices As these variables increase, so do Non-Violent Crime Severity Indices Percent of adults who have not completed high school Percent of rented households paying over 30% of family income on rent Percent of adults who are unemployed
39
Percent of households that are rented, but not in B.C. Percent of mothers who are single, less effect in B.C & Quebec Percent of adult males with no income, only in Quebec Percent of adults who have completed high school & nothing further, but only in B.C. Ethnic diversity, but only in B.C. & the North Population size, only in B.C. As median income increases, Non-Violent CSI rate decreases
