5 SPAIN – Santa Fe Capital (money) given by the crown. Government pays Spanish citizens to settle an area. The colony is organized by the crown, you have to have permission to settle in an area (where and how you can live), they make all of the laws and plan the layout of the cities.

7 Types of Settlements Pueblos – trading posts for economic reasons (traders & merchants) Missions – Spanish priests would convert Native populations (priests) Presidios – Forts and soldier outposts for military strength in the region (soldiers)

8 Exploration Crown pays for soldiers to go with explorers. Catholic Church sends missionaries with the explorers. Large groups of American Indians with organized Spanish government heads.

9 How did they make money? Selling Native Indians as slaves. Abundant precious metals.

12 FRENCH - Quebec Early settlements in Florida - Spanish killed everyone. Primary French settlements are restricted to the Far North. Funded by joint-stock companies and the French Government. Quebec area was settled by... Organized by individual men based on their needs.
