Today we’ll talk about: Plagiarism Paraphrasing Citing references Finding information sources

Plagiarism

Plagiarism is defined as: “The act or an instance of copying or stealing another’s words or ideas and attributing them as one’s own.” (Garner, 1999, p.1170) Garner, B. A. (Ed.). (1999). Black’s Law Dictionary (7 th ed.). St. Paul, MN: West Group.

(When) Is this OK? 1. Cutting and pasting from Wikipedia into your essay 2. Working on an individual (i.e. non-group) class assignment with a friend and paraphrasing each other’s work 3. Submitting an essay that you have used in the past for another course 4. Using an in-class lecture given by your professor 5. Paraphrasing a paragraph from a textbook and citing it 6. Using someone else’s argument you read on a blog 7. Using someone else’s images or diagrams in your paper UWO Scholastic Discipline

Paraphrasing

Find the plagiarism & problems! Excerpt from a (fictitious) paper “Barbarism and Civilisation in Robert E. Howard’s Conan” contains at least 3 instances plagiarism and lots of citation errors or omissions. Find them!

Barbarism and Civilization in Robert E. Howard’s Conan by Dan E. Lectro Conan (Howard 1967) is a book of short stories about a barbarian, Conan of Cimmeria. Conan is “…black-haired, sullen-eyed, sword in hand, a thief, a reaver, a slayer, with gigantic melancholies and gigantic mirth,…”. Robert E. Howard said of the development of the character Conan that “He simply stalked full grown out of oblivion and set me at work recording the saga of his adventures.” (Finn 1999) Many of Robert E. Howard’s ideas relating to barbarism and civilization are due to his being a student of early Texas history. He believed that “Barbarism is the natural state of mankind. Civilization is unnatural. It is a whim of circumstance. And barbarism must always ultimately triumph.” (Howard) In one of the most celebrated Conan stories, The Tower of the Elephant, Conan joins up with Taurus of Nemedia to steal the jewel of Yara. The story culminates in Conan slaying a withered, elephant-headed creature from another planet, but he did it to be nice. Works Cited Howard, Robert E. Conan. London: Sphere, 1967. Print. Finn, Mark. 9 Citing your references in the text: Why? to show you are aware of past research to help support your arguments to be clear about your own intellectual work to provide access to original sources to avoid plagiarism

Citing your references in the text: What? Everything you quote directly “ ” Everything you paraphrase The sources for any:  process  background material  numbers or data  tables or graphs

APA

Citing your references in the text: How? APA: Author-Date system parenthetical references (Grant, 2002)

TITLE PAGE INTRODUCTION BODY (your arguments): Characteristics of effective engineering design teams include … (Delson, 2001) CONCLUSION REFERENCE LIST: Delson, N. J. (2001). Increasing team motivation in engineering design courses. International Journal of Engineering Education 17(4-5): 359-66.

Direct Quotations If using the exact words of an author, and not paraphrasing, you must use a direct quote. You must include the page number of the reference in the parenthesis e.g., (Grant, 2002, p.37) Engineers should be cautious, since “owners in the U.S. are beginning to sue designers simply because their new building is using too much energy” (Parsons, 2007, p.45).

For each of the following items What is it? How would you find it?

Citing your references in the text: How? Chicago Style or Turabian Endnotes – Bibliography system Use an endnote 2 for citations in the text (in the order cited) Use the bibliography to list alphabetically all the references you consulted

Citations in your assignment In the text of your assignment: In your Notes page (second-last section): In your Bibliography page (at end of essay): Characteristics of effective engineering design teams include … 3 3.
