TWO STEPS FORWARD ONE STEP BACK Structural impediments for households to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and energy use for heating The new building regulations and the effect on the new built houses Tomas Persson, Tekn. dr Centrum för solenergiforskning SERC, Högskolan Dalarna www.serc.sewww.serc.se, tpe@du.setpe@du.se Programkonferens för Allmänna Energisystemstudier AES Katrineholm 6 – 7 maj 2009

Focus of my presentation New building regulations from 1:st of January 2010 How do they affect the design of new single family houses? What types of systems are possible and the most cost effective?

New BBR (Boverkets byggregler) from 1:a jan 2010 Does this open up for solar and pellet in new houses? Classified as electrically heated house if: there is no biomass heating boiler for permanent operation that covers heating and hot water demand The energy demand shall be followed up by measurements! Solar heating can help fulfilling the limit values

The simulated house A = 143 m 2 Well insulated/Passive Windows Uvalue = 1.0/0.9 W/m 2 K Floor insulation = 30 cm Walls = 26/41cm Ceiling = 50/57cm Floor heating

Exhaust air Exhaust HP (heat pump) 2 versionsExhaust/earth HP Ground coil Exhaust air Ground HP HRV (Heat Recovery Ventialtion) Heat exchanger Exhaust air Supply air Outdoor air Different heating systems and ventilation systems Pellet stove Extended room heater Solar heating system

Exhaust HP, Pellet District heating needs HRV and maybe solar Harder to meet the demands in Kiruna Passive houses are close to the limit Ordinary exhaust HP difficult in all climates. Condensing exhaust heat pumps possible

SP have already made an investigation Exhaust HP not possible without passive houses Biofuel needs solar, HRV or passive house in Kiruna With ground HP the houses need no improvement ENERGI&MILJÖ APRIL2009

Economic evaluation (annual instalment method)

How will the house builders adapt to the new regulations? More condensing exhaust HP and ground HP and maybe not better insulation standard. Wood/pellets+solar+HRV reasonable economical. In Kiruna only ground heat pumps are possible in poorly insulated houses. Using pellet/wood/district heating requires HRV (heat recovery ventilation or passive houses). Passive houses almost not possible in Kiruna.
