Transportation Technology Engine Operation: Two-Stroke Cycle C. Stemmler 4d Two Stroke Engine
2
Two-Stroke Cycle ?Two-Stroke - performs the intake, compression, firing (power), and exhaust sequence in one revolution of the crankshaft, e.g., two strokes of the piston ?Three main designs/types: ?a) 2-port type (with reed valve) ?b) 3-port type (piston design) ?c) Exhaust valve type (Detroit Diesel)
3
2 Stroke Cycle ?Small Engines - motorcycles (off-road), lawnmowers, grass-trimmers, chainsaws, outboard (boat), and snowmobiles. ?Diesel Engines - either very small utility, or very large truck engines (phased out due to high emissions). Application:

2 Stroke Cycle ?Gas is mixed with oil for lubrication; a “special” 2-stroke oil, often green or blue colour--32:1 ratio ?crankcase must be sealed--seals usually at either end of crankshaft ?crankcase may be split or one piece; modular design (inexpensive & light) Small Engines:
